Join OM System Ambassador Lee Hoy in his home region photographing star trails in the Fort Davis, Texas region in March 2026 which would be a superb opportunity—this is high desert country at altitude with some of the darkest skies in the lower 48, especially around McDonald Observatory and the Davis Mountains. The air tends to be crisp and dry, which helps reduce atmospheric distortion. Typical March evenings offer mild to cool nights, so you’ll need warm layers.
Late winter to early spring means nights are still fairly long, so you’ll have extended hours of darkness. Moon phases matter—late-March finds the moon at waxing crescent where it rises early in the day and sets early to mid-night. This will afford some light on our foreground without being too bright for awesome star trails. The region benefits from very low light pollution thanks to protected dark-sky status (including part of the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve) and active lighting control efforts.
You’ll want a sturdy tripod, wide-angle lens (preferably fast, f/2.8 or faster if possible), remote shutter release (or intervalometer), and to set for long exposures. Framing with interesting foregrounds—silhouetted mountains, observatory domes, or trees—can give your star trails more impact. In short: cold night, very dark skies, long exposure—picture perfect conditions for star trail photography with live composite.
NOTE: This workshop has two different pricing structures, the low registration fee is for those who are currently participating in or have previously participated in Part 1 or Part 3 of the OM System Mentorship Program.
Lee has created a workshop to help you master star trail photography using Live Composite!
This workshop will primarily teach you star trail photography using the computational photography feature known as Live Composite.
Lee has served as an OM System Ambassador since April 2019! And has lived in the area since 2015! He has explored the region for over 40 years!
Program a custom mode or modes for night sky photography and create settings in bulb mode for live composite star trail images.
This workshop includes a group pre-workshop zoom meeting to help you prepare for the trip by discussing clothing, camera gear, accessories, travel suggestions, and more. It also includes a post workshop group zoom meeting for an image critique discussion for those who opt to share images for critique. Both sessions will be recorded and provided for repeated viewing.
The dates for the workshop are March 23 - March 27, 2026.
Minimum Number of Participants is 5, Maximum is 12.
The price of the workshop is $575.00 for OM System Mentorship Program Participants and $1049 for non OM System Mentorship Program Participants. The total is paid in full upon registration.*See sections above and below for what is included and not included.
Participants should stay in Fort Davis, Marfa, or Alpine in that recommended order. Hotels and airbnb are best bests.
No Meals are included in the workshop.
Participants will need to drive to Fort Davis from whatever local airport they choose. Carpooling during the workshop will make it much easier on remote location parking.
There are two airports both are about 3 hours from Fort Davis. My preference is El Paso International Airport (ELP). The other airport is the Midland International Air & Space Port (MAF). If you fly into El Paso, you lose an hour due to time zone difference when arriving and gain an hour when leaving.
