Join OM System Ambassador Lee Hoy at his home in the Davis Mountains of west Texas to be immersed in the magical world of hummingbird photography! Photographing hummingbirds in the Davis Mountains is a blend of patience, precision, and technical magic. Using high-speed sync flash makes it possible to freeze wingbeats and capture unique positions! When photographing with natural light, we can preserve the warm colors of the high desert landscape. Perched birds offer moments to focus on iridescent feathers and razor-sharp detail, while flying hummingbirds demand anticipation, fast reflexes, and careful control of light to stop motion without flattening the scene. The combination of rugged natural mountain light, high speed flash sync setups. , and the constant darting energy of the birds turns each frame into a small triumph of timing and technique.
This workshop is planned for the peak of fall migration when 4 to 7 species of hummingbird can be expected! With only two photographers during each workshop, you will receive plenty of personalized attention during the workshop. High Speed Sync Flash and natural light setups will include native flowers. Natural light photography will include perched and flying birds! We will discuss settings such as autofocus, exposure, composition, and post processing.
The Davis Mountains of west Texas has a remote "neighborhood" where I live. This "neighborhood" has recorded the same number of hummingbird species as Arizona! 19 total species with a one different species for each location!

The closest major airport is in El Paso, Texas (airport code is ELP) or Midland International Air & Space Port (MAF). It is about a 3 hour drive with no stops and no traffic from either airport. El Paso is easier to access with much less traffic and construction, but you land in Mountain Standard Time and are traveling to Central Standard Time. I prefer El Paso over Midland.
